Meet Lillie Frechette Esparza , Cindy Burris Frechette , & Dixie Frechette ! Local ladies who own and run Sunny Paige Dripping Springs; a home decor, women’s clothing store and gift shop!
Describe to us about your store, Sunny Paige Dripping Springs.
We are a clothing, home decor and gift boutique. We are small, but try to have something for everyone. We have heard that we are the go-to place for candles in Dripping Springs!
What inspired you to open your store?
We had all been shopping at the store for years under the previous ownership. Dixie had been working at the store for a while when we were approached about it being sold. The timing was perfect! After talking about it, we decided to give it a shot going in on a business together.
What have been your biggest challenges, and/or set backs in the store opening process?
Cindy – I was surprised at how quickly the merchandise changes and staying on top of ordering. Keeping it fresh has been challenging. Also, trying to judge what other people will like and not just filling the store with things that I like personally has been hard to get used to.
Lillie – I have had to learn to not take things so personally. It is sometimes hard for me to turn off my daughter/sister brain and turn on my business partner brain. I work on it every day but have definitely made progress!
Dixie – It’s always a challenge when it comes to the buying process because you never know what customers are going to like. Every article of clothing or piece of home décor is a roll of the dice, so sometimes it takes a toll when something you really love doesn’t do well, but we are still learning as we go!
What is your favorite part about what you do?
Cindy – It is sort of like shopping for a living, which is fun. It is also rewarding to select things that sell well and knowing that other people are happy shopping at your store. I also love getting to work with my daughters!
Lillie – My favorite part is getting to work with my mom and sister. After working many different jobs with many different types of people, nothing beats coming to work with two of my favorite ladies!
Dixie – I love talking to people and getting to know our customers. Since it is in a small town, we have a lot of customers that come in frequently- sometimes multiple times a week. It’s so fun to get to know these people and their input always helps us move forward. It goes without saying that it’s also a ton of fun getting to work with my family and friends every day!
How does your personal style play into the inventory?
This is a very tricky concept. Our personal style comes into the inventory in particular pieces that we pick hoping others will enjoy them as much as we do. In all honesty, if we were picking clothes solely on what we usually wear, the store would probably be all black clothing! We have to balance what we like for ourselves with what’s on trend and also with what our customers would like. We each have particular strengths when it comes to selecting inventory. Our personal style grows with the store – we even wear less black now!
What audience are you hoping to gain from your store?
We strive to have a little something for everyone, whether young or old. One of our most regular customers is a 99-year-old woman! Since the store has been around long before we took ownership, locals think that they know what we have in the store. In reality, we have added lots of new, “younger” fashions since taking over while still maintaining what long-time customers have always loved. We would like to see more young women coming into the store.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Cindy – I like to go to the lake with my husband, Jim, and dog, Rosie, travel, and go to flea markets all around the country!
Lillie – I spend my days off with my husband, Tony, and our two dogs, Scooter & Domino, & cat, Oliver. When we are able to be home together, we are usually relaxing on the couch or out with our friends. I also try to get together with my girlfriends at least once a week to catch up.
Dixie – I love to hang out with my friends, whether it’s going out or just having wine nights at home watching movies. I also spend a lot of time with my dachshund, Louis!
Do you have any advice for people who wish to do something similar to what you’re doing?
Go for it! There are many resources available and don’t ever be afraid to ask for help. Some days are better than others, and some can be pretty frustrating, but it’s all a part of learning. When something doesn’t go as we thought that it would, we just have to remind ourselves that we are new to this and will pick up and move on. At the end of the day, it is so much fun and so rewarding.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Cindy – I hope to be doing the same thing, unless I have retired and handed the reins off to my girls.
Lillie – Hopefully starting a family and continuing to be a big part of the store. Luckily for me, my mom & sister would let me off the hook and give me some time off!
Dixie – In 5 years, I would love to see Sunny Paige expanded into Austin! I would absolutely love to open another location, and Austin would be the perfect place.
