It’s important to know how you want your footage to look, and using LUTs (look up tables) enables users to try different styles of color and contrast. These four images are four different LUTs that I was looking at in the studio the other day. Looking closely, you can see how one has more magenta and darker blacks, while another has warmer skin tones. LUTs are typically applied to the final image while color grading. They are also used by cinematographers on set so they can shoot specifically for the look they desire, as well as the director’s monitor so the production team can get an idea of how the final image will look.
